There are numerous Open Mapping projects underway on the internet.

The aim of these projects is usually to provide the community with royalty-free, copyright free maps for anyones use.

A lot of online maps, such as Google Street Maps, MSN/Live Maps and Yahoo Maps, while free to use, have copyright restrictions prohibiting derivative works.
