In the Pro's section for GC, the statement "You're supporting the building of consistency, rules and guidelines within geocaching." is false and possibly should be changed, but I don't know to what. The rules as they stand are ONLY dictated by groundspeak without much community input, and by listing a cache there you are not "building consistency, rules or guidlines", merely acquiescing to groundspeaks polcies and guidelines.

I think the application of rules as GC do it (whether or not I agree with the particular rules) is a 'pro' that is offered by them & is in direct contrast to the GCA free-for-all (which also has positives). I thought it only fair that if GCA 'pros' include mention of developing a 'free and open caching system' then the contrasting position should be mentioned as a 'pro' for GC.

ok
Ok, I see where you are coming at with it... I was looking at it from the context of "by using gc you will have some input into the rules" angle..thank for the clarification (CraigRat)

The addition of "based on overseas" to "You're supporting the application of consistency, based on overseas rules and guidelines, within geocaching." doesn't seem appropriate. It is adding a negative connotation to a line that is meant to be a pro. Whether or not gc.com rules are 'overseas' rules is purely a subjective opinion. The 'pro' that is trying to be established here is that it may be preferable to build consistency and rules - where those rules come from isn't the issue. I'm going to revert the change as it hardly seems to be a 'pro' statement any more. (The Garner Family)

Reversing the arguments
I've reversed the listing of the Pros & Cons sections for both the GC and GCA subsections of this page. I think it is better to state the pros first rather than the cons as it helps the reader to build a positive mental picture with which to weigh the negatives against, rather than the opposite. Sort of like "gimme the good news, then the bad news" as it were. Feel free to change it back if you disagree... The Ginger Loon
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=Talk:GCA_vs_GC&diff=4880Talk:GCA vs GC2007-04-11T06:18:08Z
The Ginger Loon:

Where should I list my cache?
A majority of Australian caches are listed on the Groundspeak site, at Geocaching.com but there is a strong and growing community of Australian cachers choosing to list their caches right here at Geocaching Australia. Geocaching Australia began listing caches to assist those who didn't like that Groundspeak was dictating how the game was played, or that Groundspeak were making money out of the game.

To help you make your decision, some pros and cons of each listing site are provided below.

Listing your cache with Geocaching Australia
Pros:
* Geocaching Australia freely provides GPX files with bulk cache coordinates and information, for easy uploading to your GPS.
* You're supporting the evolution of the game. Geocaching Australia doesn't have restrictive listing policies. Innovation is encouraged.
* More variety, some types of caches (moveable caches, locationless caches or virtual caches) are only able to be listed on Geocaching Australia.
* Swaggies, the Geocaching Australia version of Travel Bugs, are free.
* Your cache is immediately available on the website, no waiting for it to be published, and you can set up Future releases, to be made available on a date you choose.
* You're supporting Free and Open Geocaching. Free to play, free to access your data.

Cons:
* You won't have as many people finding your cache. Some cachers (especially international visitors) don't know about Geocaching Australia yet, and some cachers refuse to find caches listed on Geocaching Australia.
* Geocaching.com purchased and trackable Travel Bugs and Geocoins cannot be logged in or out of your cache.

Listing your cache with Groundspeak
Pros:
* More people will know about and find your cache, including overseas cachers holidaying in Australia.
* The cache is listed amongst the global community of other caches.
* Travel bugs and Geocoins can be logged in and out of your cache.
* Publication (after reviewing) indicates that your cache conforms to Groundspeak's published listing restrictions, which gives finders certainty about some aspects of your cache.
* You're supporting the building of consistency, rules and guidelines within geocaching.

Cons:
* Cachers have to buy a premium membership to download bulk amounts of cache information from geocaching.com.
* Restrictions on cache listings.
* No moveable caches, locationless caches or virtual caches.
* Caches must be reviewed by a volunteer community reviewer before it is listed.
* Trackable Travel Bugs must be purchased.

In summary
* If you have noone nearby who finds caches listed on Geocaching Australia (put your home coordinates in your profile and click the "Neighbours" link on your cacher page to check and see if any nearby cachers have found GCA caches. You could also use the GCA Cacher Network Link for Google Earth or ask on the Geocaching Australia Forum); or
* If you would be disappointed with not many finds (eg: you have children helping you put out the cache who want to watch lots of finds); or
* If you don't care about politics and just want to play the game...

...then listing your cache with Groundspeak might be better for you. Otherwise, try listing the cache on Geocaching Australia!
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=GCA_vs_GC&diff=4878GCA vs GC2007-04-11T06:10:19Z
The Ginger Loon: /* Listing your cache with Geocaching Australia */

GCA
The Ignore List is a list of caches which you do NOT want any notifications or updates on (the opposite of a Watchlist).

If a cache is placed on this list it will not appear in the GPX, ZIP or RSS files available from the caches list page, nor will it appear in the list of caches on the screen.

A cache can be added to this list by going to that caches particular page and clicking on 'Ignore' in the sidebar on the right.

You can view/edit your Ignore list my going to the My tab and selecting 'Ignore List'

At the moment you will need to remove this from your Watchlist if you have it there also.

This feature does not have any effect on the mailed out version of the state GPX files as these are non-user specific.
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=GCA_Licence&diff=4771GCA Licence2007-01-16T13:51:25Z
The Ginger Loon:

The front of the licence displays the GCA Logo, the serial number of the card, along with the licence holders name and image. Images were either GCA Forum avatars or photos supplied by the cacher along with team logos, if required. The licence conditions were also stated. The cards were individually dated and signed by Iva Hiddenone, Controller-In-Chief. The back of the licence featured a handy explanation on the basics of geocaching, which could be used in the event a cacher was approached by a muggle and asked what they were up to.
The cache page on Geocaching Australia gives you details and links about the cache.

Here's an example of a cache page: http://geocaching.com.au/cache/ga0072

The page is broken into two colums.
*Main section
*Sidebar

Main section
This part of the cache page list the details about the cache itself and is brocken into several sections

Top Section
The top section lists;
* The name of the cache, along with it's location and state. An orange name means that the cache is has been recommended by others.
* The cache owner, date of placement and waypoint number. For Geocaching Australia caches this number has a GA prefix. Groundspeak caches have a GC prefix.
* Other cachers who may be watching or planning to do the cache.

Cache details
This section lists the following information;
* Difficulty and Terrain ratings.
* Cache type
* Cache size
* Coordinates in Lat/Lon DD MM.mmm format with WGS84 datum.

For Groundspeak caches, this section provides details on how to view the cache details at the native hosting site (geocaching.com)

Description
This section lists information that may be required to find the cache. It may also contain details on the history of the location , out line the theme of a themed cache or outline the specifics of game play for mystery or multi-caches.

Gallery
If there are gallery items (pictures or other graphics) to be found for the cache, this section will be displayed with a link to the relevant gallery. Clicking the link displays thumbnails of all the gallery items on one page.

Tags
This section lists any public tags that may have been attributed to the cache.

Hints
This section may contain hints to use if you have difficulty finding the cache out in the field. Hints are Encoded in ROT 13 encoding. A Decryption Table is provided for those who cache with a print out of the cache page. A Decode button is also provided for online viewing or paperless caching.

Logs
This section lists the various logs made against the cache, grouped by month, with the most recent at the top.

Graphs
This section displays a graph showing Found (in blue) and DNF (in red) logs on a month-by-month basis.

Plots
This section displays a regional map (Aust, NZ & PNG) with coloured dots representing various details;

Occasionally cache owners need to transfer ownership of their listings to other cachers.

If the cache is listed on Geocaching.com you can use their adoption form for self service cache adoptions.

To use the facility:
The current owner sends an adoption request by entering the cache GC code on a form and then, on the following page, the name of the adopting cacher, along with a note. The adopting cacher will receive an email with a clickable link to complete the adoption.

An adoption can be cancelled at any time before the adopting cacher accepts the adopton by returning to the page and entering the GC code. You will be given an option to cancel.

If you decide to cancel the adoption before it is completed, the adopting cacher will not receive an additional email notifying of the cancellation.

This form cannot be used for orphan caches. Contact a geocaching.com reviewer if the owner cannot be found.

This form also works to adopt Travel bugs or Geocoins
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=GCA_vs_GC&diff=4669GCA vs GC2006-11-24T11:31:16Z
The Ginger Loon: /* Listing your cache with Groundspeak */

Where should I list my cache?
A majority of Australian caches are listed on the Groundspeak site, at Geocaching.com but there is a strong and growing community of Australian cachers choosing to list their caches right here at Geocaching Australia. Geocaching Australia began listing caches to assist those who didn't like that Groundspeak was dictating how the game was played, or that Groundspeak were making money out of the game.

To help you make your decision, some pros and cons of each listing site are provided below.

Listing your cache with Geocaching Australia

Listing your cache with Groundspeak
Cons:
* Cachers have to buy a premium membership to download bulk amounts of cache information from geocaching.com.
* Restrictions on cache listings.
* No moveable caches, locationless caches or virtual caches.
* Caches must be reviewed by a volunteer community reviewer before it is listed.
* Trackable Travel Bugs must be purchased.

The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=GCA_vs_GC&diff=4668GCA vs GC2006-11-24T11:30:27Z
The Ginger Loon: /* Listing your cache with Groundspeak */

For changes to the Wiki, see the Wiki Development List.

Roadmap
* Get collaborative development process going
* Move to mysql
* Single sign-on for gallery, forum, wiki, gca (upgrade all packages)
* Images, swaggies

Work in Progress
Ideology
* rearchitecture of /caches, move the remaining xml directory into object directory structure

Mind Socket
* Follow up items for basic stats ...
** Cache results for previous months/years/anytime
* Fix mates and other searches
* Neighbours - similar to mates, but using cacher coords

caughtatwork
* (Completed awaiting deployment) Move caches found / hidden map to GCA from caughtatwork.net (thematic plot)
* (Completed awaiting deployment) Add distance and direction to cache page for GCA caches only.

Riblit
* more GPX options, eg unfound caches, etc
* look into fixing postcode database

CraigRat
* Modifications to how Movable Caches work :
** Storage of initial waypoint

* 'Your GCA Logs' GPX file, to keep your GSAK up to date with ALL your GCA logs

* Gallery
** Adding an integrated gallery for cache logs
** Allow co-ordinate tagging of images and explore what we can do with this
** Look at the posibility of migrating the current Gallery into the new system (don't hold your breath!)

Fix Bugs/Basic Functionality
* Get swaggies working (import, listing and logs)
* Bed down importing utility: protect against smart waypoint names
* Get cache updates working properly for GCA caches which have a delay between drafting and publishing
* Add locationless to gpx and anchors
* Add links to profiles and website on cacher pages
* auto-populate state field (or at least default to something reasonable)
* Fix character encoding bug
* Fix apostrophe bug in cacher name admin panel
* Fix COPA page
* Tag virtual caches
* Improve auto-archiving: unarchive a cache when a find is imported through the wizard

Search
* Advanced search/query/stats engine
* download any search as a gpx/kml, etc

This is a Cut 'n' Paste from the forum

Hi y'all,
I'd like to request a better / more advanced search capability for GCA. I'd like to see the ability to do a keyword search not just for cache names but also within the cache descriptions and the logs.

Searching for "bananas" for example would return something like;

4 caches found with "Bananas" in the title

* He Likes Bananas. - GA5516
* I Like Bananas - GA5514
* You Like Bananas? - GA5515
* You Think I'm Bananas, You Should See My Brother! - GA5517

6 caches found with "Bananas" in the description

* Apples & Oranges - GCFRUT
* He Likes Bananas. - GA5516
* I Like Bananas - GA5514
* You Like Bananas? - GA5515
* You Think I'm Bananas, You Should See My Brother! - GA5517
* St Elmos Fire - GCWH79

7 logs found containing "Bananas"
* 15/4/03 - Geomonkeys - Apples & Oranges - GCFRUT
* 16/8/04 - Team Chaos - Tim Tam & Freddo Frenzy - GCFULL
* 25/12/05 - Mind Socket - Apples & Oranges - GCFRUT
* 1/1/06 - ideology - He Likes Bananas. - GA5516
* 2/1/06 - Swampgecko - I Like Bananas - GA5514
* 2/1/06 - Team Chaos - I Like Bananas - GA5514
* 15/6/06 - Team Piggy - You Think I'm Bananas, You Should See My Brother! - GA5517
* 15/10/03 - Gulargonthorpe Inc. - St Elmos Fire - GCWH79

----

Additional functionality
* Something that Loon wanted about making the footer text into links to recommended caches, etc
* GeoLists
* Postcode editor
* Scheduled/forthcoming cache release (coords hidden until T-0)
* combinations of "planned" lists, possibly based on mates (caches my mates are also planning)
* What do my mates recommend?
* User-friendly layout control of cache pages / logs (use BBCode?)
* Improve cache ratings (including cache of the year)
* Site map
* When logging a cache, allow a non-published note to the owner (sends PM?)
* Show nearby unfound caches after logging - improves workflow
* Automatic winners' page for finders
* Cache attributes
* World wind user selectable altitude setting (World What? Google Earth made it redundant!)
* auto-remove planned caches when found
* international caches
* tagging caches
* GPX File for all of Australia / all GCA caches

Bonus Sharing
* Moveable cache trails
* Zip gpx files
* iCal feed for upcoming events/caches

Gallery
* Integrate gallery logon
* One-click photo upload from cache listings and logs

Stats
* Add a simple summary to the cacher page of how many finds of each cache type
* Cache(r) half life, plot decline in find frequency
* Cache(r) find frequency. Straight, and vs diff/terr
* team v location: where different teams are putting their caches. colours represent teams
* terrain v difficulty: correlated as most people don't understand the difference?
* terrain v location: urban are are easy terrain, the ones away are harder?
* difficulty v location: opposite to above
* team cache style profiles: terrain v location, coloured blob represents team. colour gets brighter/blob larger as teams plant more caches of that style.
* hit/miss ratio v terrain, difficulty
* time to first find v location, time: hypothesis is that ttff is small in sydney but large further out. other hypothsis is that average ttff has decreased significantly over the past 12 months
* team territorial analysis - thematic plot of where each team is usually active. for each team, assign (say) 5 points for a cache that they have laid, 2 points for a first find and 1 point for a normal find. then start shading areas based on the pointscore and see what you get. should be able to see odlid dave sitting down there in jannali, dogs up in hornsby, etc

Mapping
* Area warnings, eg Lane Cove National Park
* User correctable maps to improve quality
* Integrate GPSBabel to support zillions of formats

Hosted sites
* Database-driven blogger which makes it easy to make websites
* Aggregate comments to one page to make a community
* Links into geodashing, confluence points, etc, not just secondary site
* Autotext in comments, eg replace i! with i!, team names with links
* Auto cross-links between stories (perhaps as part of autotext, prompting bloggers to comment on each other's stories)
* Summarise comments across sites
* Auto-populate comment username
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=Pocket_queries&diff=4204Pocket queries2006-07-02T13:07:03Z
The Ginger Loon: Added date windows for ACT, NT, WA & TAS

Geocaching.com Premium members have the ability to create Pocket queries. A Pocket Query allows you to have a list of caches from a customized search, generate a GPX waypoint file and/or eBook.

A useful tutorial for creating Pocket queries is at Markwells Pocket Queries for Geocaching.com. A recent addition has been the ability to filter on cache attributes.

File Types
What formats does Groundspeak provide this data in?

* The first is a LOC file (a file with the extension LOC on the end). This is currently the default file type that Geocaching.com uses when exporting information from the website into a format that can be directly loaded to your GPS. All you need is some software that can read LOC files and a cable from your computer to your GPS.

* The second is a GPX file. This is similar to a LOC file, but the file contains much more information, including some information about the logs on the cache, whether or not there's a travel bug, etc. GPX files can also be run with the most current versions of EasyGPS or ExpertGPS, but there's also an abundance of new software being written by cachers to interpret these files. GSAK is the ideal software for the job.

* The third format is a eBook Format file. This is particularly useful for those cachers that have Palm Pilots or other hand-held computers. It contains the information about the cache that you normally find on the cache page, including logs and encrypted clues for the caches that meet your specified criteria. The idea is to carry your Palm device into the field and save yourself from printing off cache pages to take with you.

Date Ranges
One of the most effective ways of making sure you collect all the caches for a particular state is to set Pocket queries to work using "date windows".

These date windows work effectively because once you know there are about 500 records in a given date range, it won't change. Nobody can go back to 2004 and put more information in!
Pocket queries do not transmit data for archived caches. Because some caches will inevitably get archived, your pocket queries will get smaller over time if you base them on date windows. For this reason it's a good practice to re-jig the date window of your PQ's every so often. This will keep the number of PQ's you recieve down to a manageable level and possibly under Groundspeaks' level of 5 PQ's per day.
The Ginger Loonhttp://wiki.geocaching.com.au/index.php?title=Pocket_queries&diff=4203Pocket queries2006-07-02T12:52:56Z
The Ginger Loon:
