Cache type

There are many different types of caches: (Letter in brackets denotes the symbol used on Geocaching Australia Maps)

• Traditional cache (T) - a hidden stash comprising at minimum a log book (GC and Geocaching Australia)
• Multi-cache (M) - a set of waypoints leading to the final cache (GC and Geocaching Australia)
• Night cache (N)- a subtype of a multi-cache which can only be achieved after dark (Geocaching Australia only)
• Event cache (E)- a gathering of geocachers (GC and Geocaching Australia)
• Mega event (Y) - a gathering of more than 500 attendee geocachers
• Giga event cache (E) - an especially rare event with regularly more than 5000 attendees
• Virtual cache (V) - a cache with no cache container (Geocaching Australia only, grandfathered on GC)
• History cache () - a cache with no cache container but mandatory historical questions and answers to get a codeword to log (Geocaching Australia only)
• Burke_and_wills cache (Camel Icon) - a special cache series marking the 150th anniversary of the ill fated Burke and Wills Expedition (Geocaching Australia only)
• Locationless cache (L) - also called a reverse virtual (Geocaching Australia only)
• Moveable cache (B) - find it, take it, hide it somewhere else (Geocaching Australia only)
• Beacon Cache (D) - a Multi-cache that uses technological means to determine one or many subsequent waypoints
• Mystery/Unknown cache/Other (O) - a catch-all to cover other possible caches (GC and Geocaching Australia)
• CITO cache - special type of event with Cache In Trash Out intentions (GC only, use Event on Geocaching Australia)
• Earthcache (R) - view a unique geoscience feature on-the-ground (GC only, use Virtual on Geocaching Australia)
• Webcam cache (W) - take a picture to log (Geocaching Australia only, grandfathered on GC)
• Letterbox cache (X) - hybrid with letterboxing (GC only)
• Podcache (P) - multi-cache where the directions are provided in audio (Geocaching Australia only)
• Trigpoint (Z) - climb a mountain, take a picture, get a smiley

Some types can be listed on GC (Geocaching.com) as well as Geocaching Australia (Geocaching Australia), some on only one site. Geocaching.com has grandfathered some types, meaning they are no longer allowed for new caches, although existing caches remain.

Other cache listing websites may support other types.
