Locationless cache
This page contains information specific to Geocaching Australia. |
A Locationless cache is a cache where the hider has found something interesting and sets a challenge to other geocachers to find more of the same item. The items could be
- State Survey Markers
- Unique letterboxes
- Dams of the world
- Hume and Hovel Monuments
- Lone Pine Trees (from the Battle of Lone Pine)
- Sport related themes
- Your own GPS
There are a multitude of options available for finding or listing a Locationless geocache. As to why they are hidden; Geocaching Australia believes that everyone should have the opportunity to go geocaching. While a typical geocache is a container (cache) at a location (geo) the game was extended to include the ability to log locations / items of interest (or not interest depending on your perspective) as geocaches where there is no physical geocache at the location. There are geocachers who live in an area that is bereft of geocaches. In order to find a geocache they may have to travel far and wide to find one or two a month. The Locationless geocache type allows them to read up on locations / items of interest that may be around them and using their GPS to gather the co-ordinates they can log a find on the geocache. They may also see locations / items of interest on their travels, take a picture, grab the co-ordinates and when they return home, see if there is a Locationless geocache that fits the bill for the location / item of interest they have collected. Geocaching Australia lists hundreds of Locationless geocaches and has had tens of thousands of finds recorded against them. They are a geocache type to extend the game of geocaching to all, regardless of whether you live in the city, a regional, rural or remote area. You can play the game in any way you like.

Guidelines
Locationless caches are welcome on Geocaching Australia. Geocaching.com does not accept these caches for listing any longer. Armchair style locationless caches where the finder is not required to explore the real world, identify a location and accompany the "Find" with photograhic evidence are no longer accepted. A locationless geocache listing must require the finder to locate an object or perform a task in the real world, collect the co-ordinates and log the find with accompanying photographic evidence.
Locating a List
As there is no location for a Locationless cache, there are no associated co-ordinates, state or country for Locationless caches. A list of Locationless caches can be found on Geocaching Australia at the following location.
Examples
Proximity
When listing a locationless cache, the cache owner can set distance that your find must be from any previous find. The intent is to avoid having the same location logged more than once. A default value of 161m is set for all locationless caches unless the cache owner overrides this value.
When you are logging a locationless cache, if your log is within the distance set by the cache owner of another log, you will receive an alert message when you save your log. This alert message will highlight previous logs that are within the distance from your find. You are encouraged to check the other log and see if your log is finding the same item. If it is, then you are encouraged to edit your new log and change it to a note.
Maximum Number of Finds
When listing a locationless cache, the cache owner can set a maximum number of times you can find this cache. The intent is to avoid having the same cachers logged more than a defined number of times. A default value of 0 is set for all locationless caches unless the cache owner overrides this value. A value of 0 is unrestricted finding.
When you are logging a locationless cache, if your log would put your find count over the maximum number of finds permitted, you will receive an error message and your log will not be processed.
Locations Co-ordinates
When logging a locationless cache you must provide the co-ordinates of the location where the photo was taken or the task was completed. Frequently logging false or fake co-ordinates to bypass this requirement may result in suspensions of your ability to log locationless geocaches.
Photographic Evidence
When logging a locationless geocache you must provide photographic evidence of the item you have found or the tasks you were required to undertake. Logs which are not accompanied by photographic evidence within 7 days of your log will be converted into a "note" from a "Found It" type log. Frequently loading false or fake photographic evidence to bypass this requirement may result in suspensions of your ability to log locationless geocaches.
