There are many different types of caches:

  • Traditional cache - a hidden stash comprising at minimum a log book (GC and GCA)
  • Multi-cache - a set of waypoints leading to the final cache (GC and GCA)
  • Event cache - a gathering of geocachers (GC and GC)
  • Virtual cache - a cache with no cache container (GCA only, grandfathered on GC)
  • Locationless cache - also called a reverse virtual (GCA only)
  • Moveable cache - find it, take it, hide it somewhere else (GCA only)
  • Beacon Cache - a Multi-cache that uses technological means to determine one or many subsequent waypoints
  • Mystery/Unknown cache - a catch-all to cover other possible caches (GC and GCA)
  • CITO cache - special type of event with Cache In Trash Out intentions (GC only, use Event on GCA)
  • Earthcache - view a unique geoscience feature on-the-ground (GC only, use Virtual on GCA)
  • Webcam cache - take a picture to log (GCA only, grandfathered on GC)
  • Letterbox cache - hybrid with letterboxing (GC only)
  • Podcache - multi-cache where the directions are provided in audio (GCA only)
  • Trigpoint - climb a mountain, take a picture, get a smiley

Some types can be listed on GC (Geocaching.com) as well as GCA (Geocaching Australia), some on only one site. Geocaching.com has grandfathered some types, meaning they are no longer allowed for new caches, although existing caches remain.

Other cache listing websites may support other types.
