Whodunit!

The Game

One of the Geocaching Australia mascots has nicked a geocache! Bad mascot! Wicked, bad, naughty, evil mascot! But don't worry, you can help us to work out who took what, recover the geocache and get it back in place.

You need to work out which of our mascots took the geocache, what type of geocache they took, what container or size it was, the difficulty and the terrain and what state it was taken from. When you have collected enough clues and can identify WhoDunIt then you can make an accusation.

A correct accusation will mean you will be rewarded with a specially minted pathtag. But, beware! A wrong accusation will eliminate you from the game and there is no second chance. So accuse wisely.

Collecting Clues

Your card deck is made up of 14 mascot cards, 22 geocache cards, 7 container cards, 9 difficulty cards, 9 terrain cards and 8 state cards, for a total deck of 67 cards.

Each time you find a qualifying cache in the real world that contains a WhoDunIt clue, you will be able to reveal a card from that set of clues. Be aware that you could collect up to 5 duplicate cards for each card in that set of clues. Once you receive 5 duplicates for a particular clue card the game will automatically exclude this card for any future reveals and will attempt to reveal a card which has fewer than 5 duplicates.

Clues are identified by a public tag owned by Geocaching Australia on eligible geocaches. The format of the tag is "whodunitmascot" or "whodunitgeocache", etc, for each type of clue. A collection of public queries is available to help you easily identify the caches that hold the clues.

There are some restrictions and benefits when it comes to finding qualifying geocaches.

For geocaches other than Locationless, you cannot find a geocache that you have found before. e.g. a Moveable geocache that you previously found will not be a qualifying geocache even if the tag matches.

For Locationless caches you can find a geocache that you have found before and you can find it a maximum of two more times as a qualifying geocache.

For example, you find a Locationless cache that you have found previously, and has a matching tag, it can can be found again, two more times (subject to the rules of the Locationless cache itself) and still be a qualifying geocache. A 3rd find on the same Locationless cache would not be a qualifying find.

For each qualifying dragonZone geocache type and matching tag, you can reveal two clue cards from that clue set.

For each qualifying geocache which is not a dragonZone geocache type, and has a matching tag, you can reveal one clue card from that clue set.

For example, if you find a Traditional geocache, which is a dragonZone type, that has a matching clue tag for a mascot, then you can reveal two cards from the mascot clue set. If you find a Virtual geocache, which is not a dragonZone type, that has a matching clue tag for a mascot, then you can reveal one card from the mascot clue set.

In other words, finding caches that are dragonZone types offer you more opportunities to reveal cards, but remember, you cannot find a cache that you have found before with the exception of Locationless caches.

If you have a qualifying geocache to reveal a clue card, simply click on the "Reveal a Card" icon in the clue card area of your card deck.

When you reveal a card, the card you have revealed will be highlighted in grey. Cards you have previously revealed will be highlighted in black. A count of the number of of duplicate cards you have revealed will be shown for each card. There will always be at least one clue card from each clue set that will never be revealed. When you are down to only one clue card in the clue set, then you know which clue should be used in the accusation.

Make an Accusation

Accusations will only be made available in the last two weeks of the game. To make an accusation you simply click on the "Accuse" link, select your clue cards to accuse and make your accusation.

I accuse MASCOT of stealing a GEOCACHE TYPE of size CONTAINER, with a difficulty of DIFFICULTY and a terrain of TERRAIN from STATE.

Your have one and only one opportunity to make an accusation. If you accuse incorrectly, then your participation in the game is over. If you accuse correctly, then you will go on to win a prize. To make an accusation, you must select one and only one card from each card set.

  • Mascot
  • Geocache
  • Container
  • Difficulty
  • Terrain
  • State

It is possible that towards the end of the game you may have eliminated all clues other than one card per clue set that you will use to make your accusation. It is just as likely that you have have two or more cards to select from for each clue set.

Choose wisely. A rash, early decision, based on luck may eliminate you from the game, or if the luck of the cards is with you, you may have correctly identified the culprit. Provided you have not been eliminated from the game, use the remaining time in the game to try and whittle down the clues so you have only one clue card in each clue set.

Cards you select to make an accusation will be highlighted in green. If you select the wrong card before making your accusation, simply select a different card. You must select a card from each set. If there is only one card remaining for a card set you must select it. Once you have selected one card from each set, then you will make your one, and only, final accusation.

After making your accusation you will be asked to confirm your accusation. It is recommended that you check which cards you have selected to make your accusation before confirming your accusation. Remember a wrong accusation will eliminate you from the game. This is you one and final chance to review your selection. You will not be asked to verify an accusation again. This is your final opportunity to make sure you have the correct clue cards selected.

If you are not willing to make an accusation yet, simply return to your card deck and continue to narrow down your suspects.

Winners

If you have made a correct accusation you are a winner. Winners will receive a pathtag reward.

Ladder

As there are only winners and players who have been eliminated there is no ladder to show prize positions. A ladder will be provided showing each participant, whether they have made a successful accusation or not and the number of clue cards that have been revealed. Use this ladder and sort by clue category to see who has found the most of each clue card.
